Mthatha - A man arrested after he allegedly shot dead his 18-year-old nephew by accident was granted bail by the Dutywa Magistrate's Court on Monday, Eastern Cape police said.

“The suspect has appeared before Dutywa court this morning. He was granted bail of R1000 which he paid,” Captain Jackson Manatha said.

Manatha said matric pupil Songezo Ntozakhe, 18, knocked at the door of his uncle's house around 1.30am on Sunday.

In the dark, the uncle, Sivuyile Ntozakhe, 33, opened the door and fired a shot from his licensed firearm, hitting the young man in the chest.

When the light was switched on, Ntozakhe discovered he had shot his nephew and rushed him to the Dutywa Health Centre.

Nurses declared him dead on arrival.

Ntozakhe handed himself in to police.

The case was postponed to August 29 for further investigation.
