Johannesburg – The United National Transport Union (Untu) on Friday said they were shocked by the attack on a security guard at Transnet Sentrarand, east of Johannesburg, on Thursday and issued a strong condemnation.

It is alleged that on Thursday, a manager of Transnet Engineering assaulted the guard before running him over with his car.

Eddie de Klerk, deputy general secretary of Untu, said the union was relieved to learn that the guard was not seriously injured and was discharged from hospital on Thursday night.

"Untu is grateful that Transnet immediately took action and suspended the manager pending the outcome of a disciplinary hearing."

"The law must take its cause (sic), Untu wishes the guard a speedy recovery from this traumatic ordeal," added De Klerk.
