Vandals disrupt Cape Town trainsComment on this story
Cape Town - Train signal cables were vandalised in Cape Town on Wednesday morning causing delays to two routes, Metrorail said.
A group of vandals targeted cables between Philippi and Nyanga from 2am.
Metrorail officers were shot at when they closed in on the group.
Metrorail substituted its train service with a bus service in the area, available to weekly and monthly train ticket holders.
Repairs to the cables could take up to two days.
“It is totally unacceptable that the ill-considered sabotage of state assets should impact on innocent commuters reliant on trains for their livelihood,” said regional manager Richard Walker.
He would lay charges of sabotage, malicious damage to property, and attempted murder.
Walker asked residents in the area to come forward with information. There was a R50 000 reward for information leading to arrests.
