Benoni - A street vendor accused of killing a metro policeman appeared in the Benoni Magistrate's Court on Monday, Ekurhuleni metro police said.

The matter was postponed to Wednesday for a possible bail application, said Superintendent Vusi Mabanga.

“He has not pleaded yet, so his name cannot be disclosed. The charges have also not been read out in court yet.”

A 48-year-old metro policeman was killed in Daveyton on Sunday.

At the time, Ekurhuleni metro police spokesman Chief Superintendent Wilfred Kgasago said the officer had been enforcing by-laws when he was punched.

A businessman had allegedly been operating a food stall in an unauthorised area.

Officers were towing his caravan away when the officer was hit. He fell and hit his head and died on the scene. - Sapa
