Johannesburg - An application to set aside a military veterans' department conference was struck from the roll by the High Court in Pretoria on Wednesday, the department said.
The Azanian People's Liberation Army, the Umkhonto we Sizwe Liberation War Military Veterans' Union and the SA Defence Force Military Veterans' Association had jointly applied to set aside the conference, the department said in a statement.
The department held the conference from September 29 to October 2 to establish an umbrella body for military veterans' organisations.
“We believe (the order) will go a long way in helping military veterans' formations to streamline their organisation processes that will enable them to work effectively and efficiently with the (department),” said director general Tsepe Motumi.
He said the department would move quickly to finalise, within six months, guidelines for the recognition of military veterans' formations which wanted to represent military veterans.
“In that process, the department of military veterans, working in line with section seven of the Military Veterans Act 18 of 2011, will consult with all military veterans formations to finalise the guidelines,” said Motumi.
According to the act, military veterans' organisations are not obliged to join the association.
