Cape Town - Members of the Western Cape ANC Youth League clashed with police during a picket outside the South African Rugby Union Offices on Wednesday.

Stun grenades were used by police to disperse the crowd of about 200 people led by ANCYL Secretary General Njabulo Nzuza.

The ANCYL are calling for transformation in sports and demanded greater effort and urgency towards transformation in rugby.

Members who flocked from surrounding areas in bus loads, joined the picket to express their demands.

Andile Makomfane, coach of Langa Rugby Club said: “They need to train more black guys that have to coach at township schools because that’s where everything starts, at grassroots level. Township schools struggle to get quality coaches that can produce the talent of the young boys.”

Following the events, SA Rugby Executive member, Francois Davids said,”Rugby is transforming in South Africa, but what's happening is we are making big strides. We need organisations like the ANCYL to come and help us and they will witness the transforming of rugby day by day.”
