Durban - Westville residents can breathe a little easier following the arrest yesterday of four suspected robbers.

They are believed to be linked to an armed robbery spree in the area.

Stephen Clark of the Westville police station said crime prevention unit members responding to a house robbery report saw four men driving away from the direction of the scene. They followed the car to the M19 and tried to stop it.

After a brief pursuit, the car was stopped and the four occupants were searched.

A silver CZ75 gun with ammunition, a crowbar, bolt cutters and gloves were found.

It emerged that the car had been stolen in Hillcrest last month and the gun in Sydenham in October.

“We suspect they tried to rob the complainant’s house but were scared away,” said Clark.

The police said the gun and suspects matched the description given by several victims of house robberies in recent weeks.

The arrests came a day after another Westville couple were victims of a violent house robbery.

On Monday, a woman leaving for work was held at gunpoint by a group of men. Police said the gang stormed the house and beat up her husband before demanding luxury items.

The men stole household items and cash, then sped off with the couple’s car and their own getaway car.

The couple’s car was abandoned in Sydenham.

When The Mercury visited the couple yesterday, the man approached the car with caution.

Visibly shaken, he asked The Mercury for press cards to ensure he was safe.

“You have caught me at a bad time. I am still traumatised. I really cannot talk about this at the moment,” he said.
