Cape Town - The aunt of Western Province rugby hero Nizaam Carr wants her stolen wheelchair returned.

The 87-year-old said her “luxury ride” was swopped with a rickety old wheelchair at the Heideveld day hospital.

Juwaya Carr, of Greenfields, claims a fellow patient snatched her wheelchair while she was in the toilet, leaving behind a “rickety” chair which is also too small for her.

Juwaya says she’s been left stranded because she’s too embarrassed to hit the streets with the thief’s wheelchair.

Her top-of-the-line chair had a comfortable head rest, as well as “neat colour-coded wheels and seats”, she said.

Juwaya is now calling on the thiefto return her property before she goes to the police.

The granny suffered a stroke 18 years ago, leaving the right side of her body lame.

Juwaya says she and a friend were at the hospital in June, the day before Eid ul Fitr, when she needed the loo.

“When we went inside, we saw a woman and a little girl. The woman was in a wheelchair.”

She said they left her chair outside because it couldn’t fit into the tiny cubicle.

“When we came out, I got into the wheelchair and only realised it wasn’t mine when my son came to fetch me,” she said.

“The thief left their one for me but it’s old... look at the wheels and there isn’t even a head rest.”

“I am too embarrassed to go anywhere now because of this chair.

“I want to expose this person because I want them to return mine.”

She didn’t report the matter to the hospital because she had “no assistance getting there”.

Juwaya’s caregiver, Belinda Davids, 22, said she is shocked that someone would steal from an old person: “The auntie’s wheelchair was blue in colour and looked very nice.

“I can’t believe people will do that to an old person at hospital.”
