Pietermaritzburg - A Pietermaritzburg policeman shot and critically injured his wife and then turned the gun on himself after an argument on Thursday.
Police spokesman Colonel Jay Naicker confirmed the 31-year-old woman, identified as Nana Sibisi, was in a serious condition in hospital.
She was shot by her husband, Mthandeni Sibisi, 36, a policeman stationed at Plessislaer Police Station.
“An inquest docket has been opened,” Naicker said.
The police said Sibisi had been walking in Sweetwaters on her way to work at about 5.30am on Thursday when she met her husband.
“It is alleged he then blocked the way and forced her to stop. An argument ensued and she was shot in the lower lip, through her front teeth,” Naicker said.
Sibisi then turned the gun on himself and shot himself in the head.
He died at the scene.
Nana Sibisi was rushed to hospital to be treated for her injuries.
