Wife killer jailed for 12 years

Cape Town - A man who beat his wife to death with a steel pipe and buried her in a shallow grave in their yard will serve 12 years in jail.

Mzwamadoda Mfazwe, 45, from Mfuleni was found guilty on Tuesday for murdering his wife, Sibongile Hazel Nkomo, and defeating the ends of justice after he lied to the police about her whereabouts after her death.

He was sentenced to 15 years for the murder, of which three years were suspended for five years, when he appeared in the Blue Downs Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday.

He was sentenced to a year’s imprisonment for defeating the ends of justice. The sentences will run concurrently.

Mfazwe occasionally glanced back at the friends and relatives of his late wife in the public gallery.

The couple had been married for seven years and had two children.

He initially pleaded not guilty to the murder charge but later admitted to an altercation with his wife, killing her, tying her up with rope, dragging her body to the yard and burying her, and burying their two dogs on top of her.

Nkomo was 43 years old when she died. Her body was dug up by the police on March 20, last year.

Nkomo’s relatives were not happy with the sentence. Outside court Nkomo’s cousin Ncedisi Piliso said: “It’s bad. We have questions and what will happen with the children?”
