Johannesburg -

A shooting, in which a Rustenburg man allegedly wounded his wife and killed her colleague, apparently in a jealous rage, was condemned by North West Premier Thandi Modise on Wednesday.

“Women should no longer accept that their partners are simply jealous by allowing them to answer their cellphones or question them after every phone call they have received,” she said in a statement.

“Mistaking this for love has proved to be costly to many women in the long run.”

Captain Pelonomi Makau said that on Monday a 33-year-old man tried to call his wife to fetch him from work, but she did not answer.

When he asked her about her whereabouts, she told him that she had been with her male colleague at work.

The man was apparently enraged by the explanation. He allegedly shot his wife in the thigh, then drove to her colleague's house, where he allegedly shot him several times in the lower body and head. He died on the scene.

The man handed himself over to police and was expected to appear in the Bafokeng Magistrate's Court on charges of murder and attempted murder on Wednesday. His wife was recovering in hospital.

Modise said there had been a spate of gender-based violence in the North West recently.

“Preliminary results from a Gender Links GBV Indicators Study that highlighted that more than three-quarters of South African men have perpetrated violence against women in their lifetime and more than half of women in South Africa have experienced gender-based violence.

“These statistics are unacceptable and call for united action to expose perpetrators,” Modise said. - Sapa
