Durban - The ANC wants KwaZulu-Natal estate agent Penny Sparrow to pay R200 000 for racists comments that she made earlier in the year when she referred on Facebook to black people as monkeys who invade and litter beaches.

However, it was not immediately clear whether Sparrow, a former DA member, would even be at the Equality Court sitting in Scottburgh when it convenes on Friday.

Ever since the outrage over her comments Sparrow has gone underground and relevant court papers had not been served on her.

The party issued a statement saying that proceedings would be attended by a “high-powered” delegation, including provincial secretary Super Zuma.

“We call on the court to slap her with a heavy sentence that will send a message to all racists that this country has no place for people harbouring such naked prejudice based on the false idea of superiority because of their accident of birth as white people,” Zuma said in the statement.

“Her offensive utterings did not only poison the national mood in the country but it threatened to reverse all the gains we have notched in building a non-racial country in which all South Africans have a right to human dignity.”
