Pietermaritzburg - A man accused of raping an elderly woman was arrested in the KwaDindi area of Taylor's Halt, outside Pietermaritzburg, the Witness reported on Tuesday.

The 23-year-old man was arrested on Sunday with the assistance of the residents of KwaDindi.

The 91-year-old was raped last Sunday in KwaDindi in the Vulindlela area.

Police spokeswoman Joey Jeevan said the woman was about to go to bed in her one-room house around 9pm when she heard a knock on the door, and then another on a window. She ignored the knocking.

A short while later a man with a knife climbed into her room through a window, Jeevan told the Witness.

The man raped her several times until the early hours of Monday morning. He then threatened the woman and demanded cash.

“She handed over R250 she had under her pillow and he fled the scene,” Jeevan said.

She said the man had been charged with rape, housebreaking and theft.

He was expected to appear in the Pietermaritzburg Magistrate's Court on Tuesday. - Sapa
