Sebokeng, Johannesburg - A woman has been arrested in Sebokeng, south of Johannesburg, for allegedly concealing a birth, Gauteng police said on Wednesday.

Police were tipped off on Tuesday at 9.40am that a dead baby, with the umbilical cord still attached, was found in a plastic bag behind a petrol station in Sebokeng Zone 10, extension one, Captain Bheki Thwala said.

“Investigations by police led them to Sebokeng zone 13, where the suspect was traced and questioned.

“The suspect failed to give a convincing explanation and other members of the community confessed that they last saw her pregnant.”

The 35-year-old woman was taken to a local hospital, where it was confirmed she had given birth to the baby. She was arrested.

Witnesses apparently saw the woman with a plastic bag near the petrol station between 6am and 9am earlier on Tuesday.

She was expected to appear in the Sebokeng Magistrate's Court soon. - Sapa
