Durban - A family are reeling after a Phoenix woman was hacked to death, apparently with a bush knife, at home.

Raksha Sukku, 32, was found dead at her home in Evepalm Close, Palmview, on Saturday.

Her sister, Aksha Sukku, had left home with her mother for a prayer meeting before 9am.

The last words they heard Raksha say was, “Don’t worry I will close the gate.”

When the pair returned home, Aksha said the gate and the door were slightly ajar.

Aksha said she called out her sister’s name repeatedly.

“When I stood in the passage I could see that two bedrooms were ransacked. I called out for my sister, but there was no answer.

“My brother’s door was closed so I pushed it open to peer inside. The door did not want to open so I pushed harder. I got the shock of my life when I saw bloodstains on the walls and floor. I then caught sight of my sister’s leg behind the door.

“I knew it was her because of the pyjamas. I looked behind the door to find her in a pool of blood,” Aksha said.

Hearing Aksha’s screams, her mother rushed into the room.

“It will be something hard to forget. My mother fell on her knees and grabbed hold of my sister. She thought she was still alive. She kept calling out her name. I also did not know if her assailant was in the house,” said Aksha, who runs a salon from home.

The family also has a tuck shop.

Her brother, Rakesh Sukku, 40, said he was in a state of shock when he heard the news.

“We cannot be certain what they stole because we are going through the house piece by piece. We know for sure they took a laptop, airtime vouchers and cash. I have not entered my room since the incident. She was found behind my door.

Gash

“Her wounds were certainly not knife wounds. They chopped my sister to death using a bush knife. I think they continued chopping her while she was dead.

“She may have run into the house to hide or escape from them.

“She also had a big gash on her head which seems like they hit her from behind. She then fell on to the door shutting it,” Rakesh said.

The family had to get a funeral company to clean the room of bloodstains.

Rakesh, a truck driver, said he heard that neighbours and children had seen two men, one carrying a bush knife and the other two packets, leave the home hastily with bloodstains on their clothes.

The men crossed over a river into a housing settlement nearby.

Sukku, an administrator at Ideals in Queen Nandi Drive, was to be cremated at the Verulam Crematorium today at 1pm.

Police spokeswoman, Captain Nqobile Gwala, confirmed Sukku was found with stab wounds. She said the motive for the killing was unknown at this stage.

Phoenix police were investigating a case of murder and no arrest had been made.
