A 60-year-old Eastern Cape woman will appear in court on Wednesday for allegedly killing her three-month-old granddaughter in Chafutweni village, Willowvale, police said on Wednesday.

The baby was strangled on Sunday after her mother and aunt left the house to fetch water, Captain Jackson Manatha said.

“It is alleged that the three women did not report the death of the child on the date in question and they slept with the corpse of the baby.”

Police were notified on Monday and the three women were arrested. The mother and aunt were later released as they were not implicated.

Manatha said the grandmother was charged with murder.

“We hope that the truth will be revealed in court today (Wednesday),” Manatha said. – Sapa
