Johannesburg - A Johannesburg woman has been arrested for possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition, Gauteng police said on Friday.
A woman cleaning the toilets at the Carlton Centre, in the CBD, found a firearm inside a bucket wrapped in brown paper on Thursday, Warrant Officer Xoli Mbele said.
“Next to the firearm was a cellphone. The cleaner took all the stuff to the security office.”
A 30-year-old woman came looking for her cellphone and the cleaner told her it was at the security office.
“She went to the security office and found police waiting for her.”
Mbele said she told police that the firearm belonged to her boyfriend.
“Police phoned the boyfriend to come with his firearm licence, but he did not pitch,” he said.
Investigations revealed the gun belonged to a man who died in December 2005. The woman was detained at the Johannesburg Central police station and charged with possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition. She would appear in the Johannesburg Magistrate's Court soon.
