A woman from Thabong, in the Free State, has appeared in court on charges relating to possession of a gold bar, police said on Monday.
The 50-year-old appeared in Welkom Magistrate's Court on Thursday after the gold bar was found at her home, Warrant Officer Malebo Khosana said.
The organised crime unit had received a tip off, which led them to her house.
The woman was released on bail and would appear in court again on September 20.
Khosana said the gold bar was sent for tests to determine whether it was authentic.
Beeld newspaper reported on Monday that the estimated value of the 7kg gold bar would be around R3 million, if it was authentic.
Protea Coin Security, contracted to Harmony Gold, reportedly alerted police that the woman, Yvonne Mojanaga, allegedly buried the gold bar at her shack.
According to the report, a piece of the gold bar had been cut off and was allegedly used to buy luxuries and attract potential buyers. - Sapa
