Johannesburg - A 31-year-old man was arrested for allegedly killing his girlfriend in Kimberley, Northern Cape police said on Monday.

He was arrested shortly after the half-naked body of Bettie Thenza, 33, was found in a street in Galeshewe on Sunday morning, Lieutenant Sergio Kock said.

A passerby found Thenza’s body at around 6am. The only visible injury was a scratch mark on her swollen left eye.

Police arrested her boyfriend at a shack the couple shared, near where her body was discovered.

An autopsy would be conducted to determine the cause of Thenza's death.

The man would appear in the Galeshewe Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday. - Sapa
