Durban - A widow was shot dead during her husband's funeral service and her son was wounded, said KwaZulu-Natal police on Monday.
Captain Thulani Zwane said the shooting happened at Grootgeluk near Newcastle on Sunday.
“Both victims were taken to hospital for medical attention where the woman, 53, died on arrival,” said Zwane.
Her 30-year-old son was in a stable condition.
The suspected attacker was caught by the mourners.
“(He) was apparently assaulted by the community members who attended the funeral... The suspect was taken to hospital for medical attention,” said Zwane.
A gun believed to have been used in the attack, two magazines and nine bullets were confiscated.
“The firearm will be taken to ballistics to ascertain whether it was used in the commission of any other crime in the country,” said Zwane.
The man, 39, was expected to appear in the Madadeni Magistrate's Court soon, where he would face charges of murder and attempted murder.
