Cape Town - The community of Chris Hani in Khayelitsha was woken by the bloodcurdling screams of a woman who stumbled over the body of a man killed in an an alleged mob attack on Monday.
The body of the man, believed to be in his late twenties, was found dumped along a pathway residents used to get to the adjacent N2 highway.
He had blood dripping from his neck and residents said a tyre and bricks had been placed on top of his body.
They suspect the man had been necklaced.
Community leader Beauty Bangeni said she did not know if the man was a resident of the area.
Police spokeswoman Phindiswa Gcume said a murder case had been opened.
No arrests had been made, Gcume said.
The man’sbody was found next to a trail of blood which could be traced for at least 20 metres.
Bangeni said she thought the man was killed at another location and his body dragged to the area and dumped there.
A resident who only gave her first name as Noluthando as she did not want her surname published for her safety, said she was awoken about 7am by the screams of a resident who ran into her house.
“It was still very dark. The lady came running to my house. She banged on the door and woke me.
“She said she tripped and almost fell over a dead man laying in the pathway. I went to Beauty’s house and asked her to call the police,” Noluthando said.
Although the body was found close to her house, Noluthando said she did not hear a scuffle or noise during the night.
Noluthando’s shack is about 10m from where the body was found.
There have been at least two mob killings on the Cape Flats since April.
In May, Melikhaya Bunzi, 29, was allegedly beaten, stoned and stabbed to death in a mob attack in Philippi.
His body was found along Govan Mbeki Road, only metres from his home.
At the scene there were traces of blood, sticks and rocks.
Bunzi’s death followed that of a 28-year-old man who was caught by a mob which beat him and then necklaced him in Enkanini informal settlement in Khayelitsha in April.
The body of the man, a suspected thief, was found along Baden Powell Drive.
Tyres were also found next to the man’s body.
