Roodepan - A man was electrocuted at a substation in Kimberley, Northern Cape, on Wednesday, apparently while trying to steal copper cables, police said.

“An unidentified man in his 30s was killed by electric shock in Lerato Park electricity substation unit at Roodepan,” said Sergeant Johannes Bosman.

“Our preliminary investigation indicates that the deceased was attempting to steal copper cables from live electric wires in a sub-station.”

The man was found by municipality workers during a routine inspection at the substation.

Bosman said the man broke the door lock to gain entry, and could have been electrocuted between 9.30 and 10am.
