Cape Town - A children’s home in Cape Town is being investigated by the provincial social development department after claims of sexual abuse surfaced.

According to the department, a therapist who worked at the home came forward with allegations of sexual abuse of the girls.

“No formal accusation has been made against any particular individual, but the department takes these allegations very seriously as the safety and wellbeing of the children is our primary concern,” said Social Development MEC Albert Fritz. The department has not yet alerted the police, but has implemented measures to prevent further sexual misconduct, while the investigation takes place.

“The investigation will be wrapped up as speedily as possible, but will take as long as is necessary to get to the bottom of the allegations,” said Fritz.

The home is a child and youth centre for 25 abused women and children between the ages of 13 and 18.

The home could not be reached for comment.
