Cape Town - Western Cape premier Helen Zille on Saturday condemned the attack on two police officers in Hout Bay, which left one of them dead and the other seriously injured.

“What kind of society murders the very people who are there to protect them?” she asked, on the sidelines of the Democratic Alliance's provincial leadership congress in Cape Town.

“Killing a policeman is a crime of another order.”

She said she was offering a substantial reward to anyone who could give information that would lead to the arrest of those responsible.

A female constable, 26, was shot dead while on duty in Imizamo Yethu, Hout Bay, on Friday night. Her male colleague, 27, was seriously injured in the incident.

Zille said she believed they were shot in the head at point blank range.

Earlier in the week, metro police officer Mpumelelo Xakekile, 50, was shot and killed while issuing a fine to a taxi driver in Khayelitsha.

Zille ordered a moment of silence at the congress for the police attacks.

Provincial police commissioner Lt-Gen Arno Lamoer also condemn the attack.

“An attack on any law enforcement official is an attackon the state,” he said.

“Police officials are there to ensure safety within communities. They should not be killed.” - Sapa
