Pretoria - A 38-year-old Zimbabwean found in possession of explosives used in the bombings of ATMs was arrested on Thursday following a tip-off.
Police said the man was followed after they had received information regarding contents of his BMW X3.
He was apprehended at McDonald’s at the corner of Solomon Mahlangu Drive and Cliff Street in Waterkloof.
Captain Pinky Tsinyane said the suspect had been travelling from Zimbabwe and was on his way to deliver the explosives to a friend.
“The members were following information when they stopped and searched the vehicle and found 20 sticks of water gel explosives with detonators,” she said.
She said explosives of that nature were mostly used for ATM bombings.
“Members of the Pretoria K9 Unit, lead by Warrant Office Koekmoer and Sergeant Boya, were responsible for the arrest,” Tsinyane said.
Police on the scene swept the vehicle for fingerprints while also searching for more explosives.
The suspect was taken to Pretoria Central police station and is expected to appear in the Pretoria Magistrate’s Court soon on charges of unlawful possession of explosives.
