Pretoria - President Jacob Zuma appointed new judges to various courts on Friday, including three new Supreme Court of Appeal judges and five Labour Appeal Court judges.
“We wish the appointed judges all the best in their new critical tasks as members of our esteemed judicial system,” Zuma said in a statement.
In terms of the Constitution and on the advice of the Judicial Service Commission, Zuma appointed three judges to fill existing vacancies in the Supreme Court of Appeal.
Justices Boissie Henry Mbha, Kevin Gerard Beecroft Swain and Dumisani Hamilton Zondi were appointed with effect from June 1.
Mahendra Ramasamy Chetty and Nkosinathi Emmanuel Chili were appointed judges of the KwaZulu-Natal Division of the High Court in Pietermaritzburg, in existing vacancies.
Peter John Olsen, SC, was appointed judge of the KwaZulu-Natal Division of the High Court in Durban, in an existing vacancy.
Thoba Portia Poyo Dlwati was made a judge of the KwaZulu-Natal Division of the High Court in Pietermaritzburg in an existing vacancy.
In terms of the Labour Relations Act, Zuma, on the advice of the National Economic Development and Labour Council and the Judicial Service Commission, appointed high court judges as judges of the Labour Appeal Court.
The appointments are:
* Justice Philip Coppin of the Gauteng Local Division of the High Court in Johannesburg;
* Justice Adolph Adriaan Landman of the North West Division of the High Court in Mahikeng;
* Justice Mahube Betty Molemela of the Free State Division of the High Court;
* Justice Cagney John Musi of the Free State Division of the High Court in Bloemfontein and;
* Justice Roland Terence Sutherland of the Gauteng Local Division of the High Court in Johannesburg.
The appointments will be for 10 years and take effect on June 1.
