Johannesburg - A man accused of circulating emails claiming there was a plot to assassinate President Jacob Zuma has been sent for psychiatric assessment.

According to the Hawks, Ernest Nkosi, 26, allegedly circulated emails and text messages claiming there was a plot to kill Zuma.

In the messages, he claimed that some of the VIP car seats had been poisoned with the aim of killing the president.

Nkosi claimed that members of the Hawks, some ministers and parliamentarians were part of the plot.

Hawks spokesman Brigadier Hangwani Mulaudzi said other than the plot claims, Nkosi had sent threatening text messages to various people, among them the defence intelligence chief Lieutenant-General Jeremia Nyembe.

Nkosi was arrested at a library in Sharpeville in the Vaal and appeared in the Pretoria Magistrate’s Court on Monday. The court referred him to Weskoppies Psychiatric Hospital for evaluation.

He has been charged with impersonating a State Security Agency (SSA) official after he referred to himself as Dr Ernest Nkosi, an SSA undercover agent.

He was also charged with fraud for using a cellphone number under another person’s name, in terms of the Rica legislation, Mulaudzi said.

Nkosi will be back in court on March 7.
