The MEC for Community Safety and Transport in KwaZulu-Natal, Mxolisi Kaunda, has condemned a fatal shooting in Tongaat at the weekend.

In what is believed to have been another incident of taxi-related violence, two people were shot dead in the KwaZulu-Natal North Coast town on Saturday evening.

Kaunda’s spokesperson, Mluleki Mntungwa, said on Sunday that a police investigation would reveal the motive.

“We want to urge the police to work around the clock and leave no stone unturned in ensuring the perpetrators are brought to book and face the full might of the law,” he said.

IPSS Medical Rescue responded to the shooting.

The private ambulance service’s Paul Herbst said they arrived at the scene to find one victim dead and the other in a critical condition, with multiple gunshot wounds.

They transported him to hospital, where he later died.

A week ago, five people were killed in what was believed to have been taxi-related violence in KwaNongoma. Just days before that, a taxi boss and two of his security guards were gunned down in south Durban.

The Daily News last week reported that the murders could be linked to infighting over executive positions within the taxi industry.

Police spokesperson Colonel Thembeka Mbhele confirmed the incident.

She said police were investigating but no arrests had been made yet.
