A team of New Zealand paramedics responding to repeated emergency calls broke into a house to find two bulldog puppies, one chewing on prescription pills, another with a panic button in its jaws, news reports said on Friday.
The paramedics were forced to break into the house in Orewa, north of Auckland, after knocks on the door went unanswered, the Stuff website reported.
Inside, they found French bulldog puppy Stella and her canine partner in crime, Stuart.
Stuart had called for emergency assistance 12 times.
The dogs had gobbled up four different types of medication, packaging and all, according to local vet Matt Gumbrell.
The pills, prescribed for the dog owner's elderly mother, included the anticoagulant warfarin, and medicine to control blood pressure and diabetes.
The owners, who returned to find paramedics inside their house, rushed the doggy duo to the vet, where they were given medicine to make them vomit and allay the effects of drugs they had eaten.
Gumbrell said it was not unusual for dogs to plunder their owners' medication.
“Any vet will tell you that it is a fairly regular occurrence for dogs to eat human medicines... Dogs value the things that the owner values and so they think, well it must be something good,” he said. - Sapa-dpa
