Meyerton – A man is missing after he was swept away in a river in Riverdale, Meyerton, south of Johannesburg on Sunday morning, paramedics said.

Shortly after 11am paramedics from ER24 were alerted to the incident and made their way to the riverbank near Jan Neethling Street in Riverdale, ER24 spokesperson Werner Vermaak said.

"A group of people were found near the riverbank where they explained that the man went into the river as part of a ritual that was being held.

"Shortly after entering the river he was swept away by a strong current." Police divers arrived on the scene and were still searching the river for the man.

ER24 paramedics were on standby at the site, Vermaak said.
