London - The stern face of Adolf Hitler emerged as the sinister ghost of Germany’s Christmas past on Sunday

An exhibition revealed how the fanatical dictator’s evil hand extended even to Christmas tree decorations during the Third Reich.

Porcelain heads of Hitler would replace angels or stars. Other accessories included baubles bearing the Nazi salute Sieg Heil! or the swastika.

The exhibition at the Brotkultur Museum in the German city of Ulm features hundreds of Christmas tree ornaments through the ages from various countries. But many examples are devoted to the egos of demagogues such as Hitler and Stalin.

It was also popular in Germany during the First World War to have baubles in the shape of ‘Big Bertha’, the 150-ton howitzer used in assaults by the German army.

And Kaiser Wilhelm, architect of the Great War, gloried in photos of himself beneath Reich eagles with their wings spread out. - Daily Mail
