London - Bungling workers in France sent out a national census letter to a very prominent citizen – one Napoleon Bonaparte.

The national statistics agency INSEE apparently thought the revolutionary general and emperor still lived at 3 Rue Saint Charles, in Ajaccio on the island of Corsica.

But although Napoleon was born nearby at 1 Rue Saint Charles, he died nearly 200 years ago.

The house’s bemused current owner sent the letter back with a note reading: “Died in 1821 – please forward to Saint Peter.”

A spokesperson for INSEE tried to explain the blunder, saying a businessman had used the address “probably as a joke” and sent it to them.

They were legally obliged to check out if the address was correct, and so the letter was automatically sent out, he said. - Daily Mail
