London - The last letter known to have been written on the Titanic, in which a passenger described the “wonderful” journey, is expected to sell for £100 000 (about R1.8-million).
Esther Hart, from Ilford, Essex, wrote the letter to her mother on the ship’s headed notepaper a few hours before the liner sank on April 15, 1912 with the loss of more than 1 500 lives.
“The sailors say we have had a wonderful passage up to now,” she wrote. “There has been no tempest. It is very nice weather but awfully windy and cold.”
Mrs Hart, who was emigrating, had intended to post the letter after the ship docked, but instead kept it. She survived the sinking with her daughter Eva, seven, but her husband Benjamin died.
The two-page letter is being sold by auctioneers Henry Aldridge and Son of Devizes, Wiltshire, on behalf of a private collector who bought it from the Hart family around 20 years ago. The auction is in Devizes on April 26. - Daily Mail
