Johannesburg - Metrorail has announced that train services operating between Vereeniging via Midway to Johannesburg would resume on Tuesday after a month-long service suspension as a result of community unrest which claimed two lives in Nancefield, Soweto.

Metrorail suspended train services between Vereeniging and Johannesburg on June 26 following a violent service delivery protest around Nancefield train station as protesters barricaded roads with debris and burning tyres, making the station inaccessible.

Spokesperson Lilian Mofokeng said that the first phase to re-introduction of services in this corridor was successfully implemented two weeks ago on 11 July following intensive stakeholder engagements.

Mofokeng said the re-introduction services in this corridor was fully supported by commuters where trains were turning at Midway station.

Metrorail management advised commuters to purchase valid train tickets before boarding and thanked all involved for working hard towards full restoration of the service on this line.
