Johannesburg - A 40-year-old man died after a light aircraft he was flying crashed in Rooiberg, Limpopo police said on Thursday.

Jaco Van Renburg, a pilot, left his home in Bela Bela for Vaalwater on Wednesday morning, but never arrived at his destination, said spokesman Colonel Moatshe Ngoepe.

"His family started to be concerned around 5pm when he was neither coming back or calling them. They started looking for him and also realised that he never arrived at Vaal Water, they went to the police," Ngoepe said.

A search for the pilot led the teams to a farm in Rooiberg, outside Bela Bela on Thursday morning. He was found dead inside the plane wreck. An inquest docket has been opened by police.

The SA Civil Aviation Authority has also begun with investigations into the crash.
