Johannesburg - The ANC in the North West and Western Cape on Thursday said they were elated by the party's victory in six of the 10 wards contested in Wednesday's municipal by-elections.

“The people of Taung have spoken through their ballot that the ANC is a revolutionary movement that represented their aspirations in the past, that represents their aspirations now, and represents their aspirations in future,” said North West spokesman Ishmael Mnisi in a statement.

“We want to thank all our people who reaffirmed their confidence in the ANC by ensuring that in their numbers they vote (for) the ANC.”

The ANC took Greater Taung in North West, Ward 48 in the eThekwini metro in KwaZulu-Natal, Ward 35 in Cape Town, Ward 9 in Saldanha Bay, Kgatelopele in the Northern Cape, and Lephalale in Limpopo. The remaining four wards were won by the Democratic Alliance.

The Western Cape ANC said it was on a winning streak.

“The ANC's winning trend continues to confirm that support for the ANC in the (Western Cape) is on the rise,” it said in a statement.

“The party is able to consolidate its base areas in the Cape metro while winning back lost ground and in particular in rural areas.” - Sapa
