The ANC in the Eastern Cape on Thursday condemned the closure of a number of schools in the Mbizana region by party members who were dissatisfied with election candidate lists.

“We distance ourselves from this unfortunate incident and we call upon all our members...to refrain from disrupting school, peace and order in our communities,” spokesperson Mlibo Qoboshiyane said.

“We can't...have some of our own candidates leading disruption...when we have prioritised education as one of our key focus areas in the country,” he said.

An unknown amount of party members apparently disrupted classes on Wednesday by entering classrooms and convincing teachers and pupils to leave.

Qoboshiyane said that provincial leadership held a meeting with frustrated members on Wednesday, where they were able to raise their concerns about nominations for candidates and come to a peaceful solution.

Teachers and pupils were back in class on Thursday. -
