Rustenburg - The African National Congress (ANC) remained ready and was confident of an overwhelming win in Tlokwe, the party said on Wednesday.

ANC spokesman Zizi Kodwa said the party’s confidence was “due to the support we continue to enjoy from the people as a result of our steady record of delivery.”

“We will continue to monitor developments in this matter and are seeking legal advice on how we should proceed to protect the inalienable right of all South Africans to vote. The ANC will continue to work hard in Tlokwe and across the country for a decisive victory in these by-elections and the forthcoming Local Government Elections,” he said.

Kodwa added that the ANC had noted the decision of the Electoral Court to postpone by-elections in six wards in Tlokwe.

“We have further noted the decision of the Independent Electoral Commission of South Africa (IEC) to postpone all by-elections across the country that had been scheduled for today, Wednesday, following the ruling by the Electoral Court. As per the IEC, this decision has been taken in the interest of free and fair elections,” he said.

The IEC on Tuesday night said that all by-elections scheduled to take place on Wednesday in KwaZulu-Natal, Limpopo, North West and the Western Cape had been postponed.

“The Electoral Commission took the decision following the orders of the Electoral Court today to postpone by-elections in six of the seven wards scheduled to take place in Tlokwe,” the IEC noted.

The IEC said while the orders only related to the six wards in Tlokwe listed in the court application, the Electoral Commission considered a postponement in the interest of free and fair elections, noting that all by-elections shared similar circumstances as those ordered for a postponement by the court.
