The ANC continued to dominate the results board before midday on Thursday as the outcome of for South Africa's fourth post-democracy municipal election continued to unfold.
By 11.30am, the ANC had 11.9 million votes (63.31 percent) followed by the DA with 4.03 million (22.9 percent).
The Inkatha Freedom Party had obtained 685 461 votes (3.64 percent), the Congress of the People, 519 187 votes (2.76 percent) and the IFP splinter group, the National Freedom Party, 454 719 votes (2.41 percent).
Nationally, 23 million people registered to vote in the local government election, which has been described as a “two-horse race” between the ANC and the DA.
There was a total voter turnout of 6 967 181 people. - Sapa
