Johannesburg - The ANC and DA retained their wards in municipal by-elections in four provinces, according to results on Thursday.
Twenty candidates representing nine political parties in six wards contested the by-elections in Gauteng, KwaZulu-Natal, Limpopo, and the Western Cape.
The African National Congress retained Ward 27 in Tshwane, which became vacant as a result of the imprisonment of the councillor. Mokgadi Maria Rallele would be its new councillor.
Ward 58 in the Tshwane metro was previously represented by the Democratic Alliance and became vacant when the councillor resigned. The party's Elma Johanna Nel would be the new councillor.
In KwaZulu-Natal, Ward two in Umvoti (Greytown) municipality would have the ANC's Lunga Obert Mdlalose as its new councillor.
The ward became vacant when the previous councillor resigned.
In Limpopo, the DA's Sybil Maud Nieuwoudt won Ward four in the Lephalale (Ellisras) municipality.
The ward became vacant as a result of the death of a DA councillor.
In the Western Cape, Ward 25 in the City of Cape Town was won by the DA's Beverly van Reenen.
The ward became vacant as a result of the resignation of a party councillor.
