Durban – The elective conference for the African National Congress’s powerful eThekwini region will take place within the next six weeks.

KwaZulu-Natal ANC spokesman Sicelo Khuzwayo said that following a visit by members of the party’s National Working Committee over the weekend, a directive had been issued for holding the sixth regional conference.

“Following the NWC visit, the declaration from the NWC will take place within six weeks. That is to allow for all the processes and preparations. It’s only after all the processes have been finalised that the conference will sit. And all that will be done within the next six weeks. “

He said that these processes included the holding of branch general meetings.

The eThewkini region, with its 103 branches, has seen four attempts to hold the meeting aborted, with the most recent attempt aborted on May 2 by supporters.

When it was held on February 14, current eThekwini metro mayor James Nxumalo was elected chairman of the region in a tightly contested ballot that saw him edge out Zandile Gumede by 253 votes to 212.

However, after the conference was held it emerged three branches which had not been properly audited had been allowed to participate in electing the party’s office bearers for the region.

The party’s provincial elective conference cannot take place until all the regional conferences have taken place.
