Parliament, Cape Town - The ANC in Parliament has established a seven-member caucus disciplinary panel, chief whip Mathole Motshekga said on Tuesday.
This followed the recent ANC caucus lekgotla, which denounced the unacceptable levels of absenteeism during House and committee sittings.
Motshekga said the panel's immediate task would be to compile a list of unauthorised absentees from the two-day annual lekgotla meeting, held two weeks ago, and propose disciplinary measures against those found guilty.
The panel would be responsible for enforcing discipline, ensuring strict adherence to attendance obligations, keeping records of offences, and recommending serious transgressions to the National Disciplinary Committee or the soon-to-be established integrity commission.
“The view of the recent lekgotla was that the ANC will not wait for the finalisation of Parliament's leave and attendance policy, which is facing resistance from opposition parties, for it to curb poor attendance and impose necessary penalties.”
Members of the panel are Mmamoloko Kubayi (convenor), Pam Tshwete, Faith Muthambi, Faith Bhengu, Nonhle Dambuza, Sophie du Bruyn, and Andrew Mlangeni.
