Johannesburg - The African National Congress is “thrilled” by its performance in by-elections in the Western Cape, the party said on Friday.

“The ANC managed to win back the ward it lost to the DA in Witzenberg municipality during the last local government elections.

“We are pleased that the margins the ANC obtained are convincing, and are (a) reflection that people in the Western Cape are becoming disillusioned with the DA as a result of its inability to deliver services,” said ANC spokesman Jackson Mthembu.

On Thursday, the Independent Electoral Commission announced that the Democratic Alliance had won two of three municipal by-elections which took place on Wednesday.

More than 22,000 people had registered to cast their votes in the three wards.

One by-election took place in KwaZulu-Natal. John Neville Lewis of the DA was voted in as the new councillor in Ward 5 of uMngeni municipality. The seat was retained by the party.

Two of the by-elections took place in the Western Cape.

In the City of Cape Town, Johanna Martlow of the DA won Ward 22. The seat was retained by the party.

In the other by-election in the province, Piet Waterboer of the ANC won Ward 10 in Witzenberg municipality.

This seat was previously held by the DA. - Sapa
