Polokwane - The African National Congress (ANC) in Limpopo on Thursday denied that its executive is divided over who should take over from President Jacob Zuma next year during the elective conference.

Provincial secretary Nocks Seabi told a media briefing that the succession debate has not started in the province, adding that rumours that the provincial executive committee (PEC) was divided are untrue.

“We must indicate that there is no discussion in our PEC about the 2017 conference, we will discuss issues of the 2017 conference at the right time, and when we do so, we will be ready to appreciate divergent views,” said Seabi.

He said after the 2016 Local Municipal Elections there were rumours that spread like wild fire over the division in the PEC.

“We wish to place it on record that our PEC is very robust, various ideas are contested from various angles before a decision is arrived at on every issue,” he said.

“This reflects the vibrancy of democracy in our executive structures and it can only be mischievous to portray that as a sign of divisions. Our unity is not defined by a uniform of thinking but by a revolutionary purpose which binds us as revolutionaries.”

The PEC came under attack from its youth league after losing two municipality councils in the province during the August 3 elections.

The ANC lost more than 10 percent of its support in the province prompting talks over the ability of Seabi and ANC chairperson Stan Mathabatha to manage the province.

Seabi and Mathabatha, who is Limpopo Premier, vehemently denied that there was division, but said that factionalism was a national problem.

Sources in the party claim that factionalism and inability to solve problems caused the decline during the elections. They said investigations will be conducted to determine if support erosion was influenced by factionalism.
