The media is the main opposition ahead of the upcoming local elections, the ANC said on Tuesday.
“We must realise that in this elections the main opposition is the media. Leave the DA, leave Cope... we will work very hard against that strong opposition,” ANC secretary general Gwede Mantashe said at a briefing at Luthuli House in Johannesburg.
Mantashe illustrated this through examples such as the story about the plot to oust President Jacob Zuma, the recycling of the story of white resident associations and the misrepresentation of comments made by ANC Youth League president Julius Malema about Zuma.

the ANC croonies are their own worst enemy, not the media. Stop and punish corruption, remove criminals from the ANC's ranks, stop nepotism, start showing transparency on the deals done. Stop governement employees to tender for public contracts, etc. You do that convincingly the media wouldn't have much to report on you F%^$rs

Yep, we love democracy as long as everyone agrees with our thinking. ASctually the National Party thought the same about the press(not SABC)so the press must be doing something right.

Because they show the world how corrupt and incompetent you are ????!!!!If you have an honest hair on your hair you should be thanking them for helping you showing who you SHOULD get rid of in your organization, instead of whining like a spoiled brat who feels everybody owes you something.

The media has declared itself the official opposition to govt and must be treated as such, hence the mooted idea of turning the govt journal into a newpaper that will tell inform about what govt is doing, not only sensational stories as picked by the not so neautral media. @Morgan, the media has lied to you so many a times about the ANC and you believe them even after they had opologized for their lies publicly to the ANC, that makes you a pathetic liar: Someone who lies to an extant that they end up believing in their own lies.

The truth is Mantashe that all the HONEST rational thinking literate blacks in this country are the true enemies of the ANC regime. They will not be easily fooled. You know that the ANC must keep the voter fodder ignorant and dependent on State grants and food parcels at election times. But we all know that eventually criminals like Amin, Mugabe, Mswati et al are found out.

The media will be no opposition if you were playing fair games and stop being corrupt. So you want to fight the media so you can continue being corrupt and no one tells about it. Shame.

Well well. Dear ol' ANC is waking up to the fact that it's got no place to hide any longer. Minister Shiceka has just given the media a fat handful of a headline; and so has General Mdluli; and so have many other ANC or government 'newsmakers'. Keep the news rolling in, ANC - you're the DA's best partners right now!

Comments like this are strong indicators that the ANC is anti-democratic. A strong free press unhindered by government is one of the pillars of democracy. If the ANC had kept a clean house and had put a stop to self-enrichment, cronyism, racist labour practices, corruption, cadre deployment and the general sense of entitlement, and committed the party and its members to hard work and a deep sense of humanism, they would not be running scared. The totalitarian mind-set of the ANC is obvious. When the time comes, and it will, will they all go and sit holed up in hotels a la Gbagbo, and refuse to leave government?
