Reverend Khoza Mgojo, an ANC stalwart and recently elected as the partys chaplain in KZN has died at the age of 80.

KwaZulu-Natal - Reverend Khoza Mgojo, an ANC stalwart and the man recently elected as the party’s chaplain in KwaZulu-Natal, died this weekend at the age of 80.

A renowned cleric, anti-apartheid activist and decorated ANC veteran, Mgojo died in hospital on Sunady of natural causes.

Premier Zweli Mkhize hailed Mgojo as a champion of the rights of the elderly in KZN. At the time of his death, Mgojo was the chairman of the KZN Senior Citizen’s Forum in the Office of the Premier.

Mkhize described the late cleric as a “fearless senior citizen” who was always prepared to advance the interests of senior citizens in the province.

“We will remember him for his valuable contribution, and for being a dedicated champion of senior citizens in the province. May his soul rest in peace.”

Mkhize said the reverend always lobbied the provincial cabinet on issues related to the development of senior citizens, and that his efforts had led to the establishment of the senior citizens’ forum.

SACP provincial secretary, Themba Mthembu, said it was unfortunate Mgojo had died just a few days after being appointed the provincial chaplain of the ANC.

“We value his contribution to the liberation struggle, and may his soul rest in peace,” Mthembu said.

The ANC said it had no doubt Mgojo would have excelled in his duties as party chaplain.

These would have involved giving spiritual guidance to members and providing religious services to the party.

However, an event at which the appointment was to be made official had to be postponed last week, as he was already in hospital.

“In his death, our movement and the whole country has lost a distinguished leader and an excellent human being. We are happy that he has left behind a great legacy of a committed and dedicated leader,” said ANC provincial secretary, Sihle Zikalala.

Cosatu provincial secretary, Zet Luzipo, described Mgojo’s death as not only as a loss to the ANC, but also to the struggle of the South African people. He said Cosatu had worked closely with Mgojo in trying to bring about peace during a turbulent period in KZN’s history. - Daily News
