Johannesburg - The ANC on Monday expressed sadness at the death of party stalwart Reggie September.

“His death is a tragic and painful loss not only to his family, friends, and community, but is felt too by the ANC and South Africa,” said ANC spokesman Jackson Mthembu in a statement.

“Without a doubt, he will forever remain one of the most distinguished revolutionaries of our struggle; humanity owes him a debt of gratitude.”

September, 90, died over the weekend in Cape Town.

He was a former trade unionist, Member of Parliament, and executive committee member of the ANC.

September was one of the first non-Africans to be elected onto the ANC's national executive committee, at the Kabwe Conference in Zambia in 1985.

Mthembu said the ANC sent its condolences to September's wife Melissa Steyn, their children, and the rest of his family.
