Rustenburg - The provincial chairman of the African National Congress (ANC) in KwaZulu-Natal Senzo Mchunu said he was confident the ANC would govern Mtubatuba municipality.

Speaking to party supporters at a rally at KwaMsane sports ground on Sunday, Mchunu said through the door to door programmes and other various ways in which they had interacted with the communities, had enabled them to identify all the problems facing the people of Mtubatuba.

“When we take over the control of the council on Wednesday, we will priorities all the challenges that have been identified and face them head-on. This is the time for the people of Mtubatuba to live a better life,” he said.

The Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) said 21 by-elections would take place in KwaZulu-Natal on Wednesday, 19 of those would be ward by-elections in the dissolved Mtubatuba municipality. The remaining two by-elections in KwaZulu-Natal would take place in the Ingwe (Creighton) and Ubuhlebezwe (Ixopo) municipalities.

The ANC dissolved Mtubatuba municipality a few months ago after it detected serious problems in management and poor political oversight. Mchunu said the shortage of water, housing, sanitation and poverty were some of the things that need urgent attention.

“Once we take over in Mtubatuba we will make sure that we monitor the performance of our councillors and government departments so that all the promises we made in the Mtubatuba are met,” he said.

The IEC said by-election would also be held in Free State, Limpopo, North West and the Western Cape.

The ANC is uncontested at the Mamuss (Schweizer-Reneke) municipality in North West.

Maleseso Vivian Lee of the ANC is the only candidate in ward four. The ward was previously represented by the ANC and became vacant as a result of the death of the councillor.
