Cape Town - With membership figures rising over the past few months, the ANC in the Western Cape is reclaiming political ground.

The party’s membership dropped to 27 000 in June, immediately after the elections, but following a report-back session by branches to the ANC’s provincial executive committee last week, it was reported the party now has 45 000 members.

Assessing the progress branches made in signing up old members while simultaneously recruiting new ones, the provincial leadership said branch structures had made a 60 percent recovery.

ANC provincial secretary Songezo Mjongile said he was confident the party would meet its ambitious target of 100 000 members by December.

“Our medium-term strategy is that we want 5 percent of the voting population in the Western Cape to be members of the ANC.”

This translated into about 190 000 members.

“Five percent means we will be able to broadly represent and carry the aspirations of society.”

ANC branches have until Monday to ensure their party membership is in good standing as the party gears up to hold its regional elective conferences in October.
