Durban - The ANC in KwaZulu-Natal on Tuesday called for an investigation after two of its councillors were unseated by opposition parties in the Imbabazane municipality in June last year.

A member of the National Freedom Party and another of the Inkatha Freedom Party were appointed to replace mayor Phindile Strydom and speaker Mondli Mkhize.

The High Court in Pietermaritzburg ruled last week that Strydom and Mkhize be re-instated.

“In terms of the Municipal Systems and the Structures, only the speaker and duly appointed municipal manager can preside over a council meeting. So the meeting that brought about the regime change was declared illegal by the court,” said spokesman for the African National Congress in the province Bongani Mthembu.

He said those who were responsible for the turmoil should be dealt with accordingly and the salaries they received while they served in their illegal positions should be repaid.

“We urge the MEC for co-operative governance, Nomusa Dube, to leave no stone unturned in ensuring that those who plunged the municipality into the state of chaos are held accountable,” he said. - Sapa
